I am sad and disappointed at this revelation. Talk about "greenwashing".

I would like to urge Woolworths to completely stop selling battery eggs or meals prepared with battery eggs. Live up to your advertising. More than anything else, I am shocked at the line of your advertising campaign, blatantly pretending to care for the welfare of hens while behind the scenes, you continue to support suppliers of battery eggs. This is deliberately misleading the public! Such deception leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I really appreciate Woolworths' commitment to sell only free-range eggs, but it's very disingenuous then to use battery eggs in your own prepared products! Please make sure that ALL eggs in your shops are free-range - whether fresh or cooked, sold on their own or as part, however small, of prepared food. I would love to be able to buy your food again!

I have actually stopped buying Woolworths convenience foods after finding out that they use battery eggs. I don't care paying more, it's not like you shop there because of the competitive prices.

Woolworths' customer base is not impoverished, indeed I myself regard your prepared foods as luxuries that I can only occasionally justify on a pension. However, had I been asked the survey question about whether I would be willing to pay more to have them made with free-range eggs, I would have immediately answered YES. For the small overall increase in cost, I and most of my friends would have had no hesitation. I have nobody in my acquaintance who would ever buy a battery egg, and I am astounded that Woolworths ethical eggs policy only applies to cartons. What are you thinking?!

Have been fighting the woolworths press engine on this issue for months, and they didn't even have the decency to respond. I find the complete lack of ethics dispicable.

We have chickens on our farm all FREE and we collect our eggs daily and the taste is so different to battery eggs. And its great knowing the chickens are free and having a good life.

There is so much cruelty behind the battery eggs industry, that I can't even believe that respectable retailers stilll stock them. I buy no products that have no free-range eggs in them. And I will gladly pay a little more for productrs that do.

It is the hugely hypocritical and disingenious of Woolworths to market the Good Food Journey focussed on ethics in every step, to NOT use free-range eggs (and chicken for that matter) in ready-made meals. Although I love the freshness of Woolies vegies, I will stop buying from them if they do not change this. It is dishonest.

I am fast loosing confidence in Woolworths proclaimed integrity towards ethical farming and now find myself viewing all their marketing, especially around farming methods and environmental responsibility, with growing suspicion.

It is very sad and disturbing that Woolworths are happy to take a stand that is so obviously determined by "profits" and not by "righteousness". There are no half measures in acting ethically -- WW should assure its customers that ALL eggs used in its products are free range. This issue has less to do with numbers than it has to do with principles and ethics. If Woolworths is going to hold itself out to be ethical and all things good then it should be principled enough to clearly label those products that contain battery hen (and similarly offensive) products. Otherwise Woolworths is no better than any other retailer using 'organic', 'ethics', 'free range' etc as sales gimmicks to increase revenues. As a consumer in South Africa I am tired of being lied to and misled by profit churning businesses who have totally lost the concept of 'customer first'. Just words... Woolworths is well placed to deliver a holistic service to its customers right through to all products. Just do it!

I am very happy to see easy to prepare free-range chicken dishes on your shelves. now if you could only stock products produced by ethical farmers and suppliers and only have free-range everything and more organic my shopping would be a dream.

Dear Sir/Madam I would really be glad if Woolworths can stop selling any chickens or eggs that are not free range. It is horrific to think that chickens have to suffer at the hands of humans simply to satisfy their greed. I would really like to support Woolworths but if this doesn't stop I won't be supporting them again.

Woolworth's chicken pies are also made from battery chickens. I assumed that because all their fresh chicken as free range that their pies would be too....and I checked on numerous occasions with the serving lady that this was so and she assured me they were. When the story about the eggs broke, I decided to check this assumption out. And discovered that they are in fact battery chickens....had I known this I would never have bought woolworth's pies - this is a matter of principal to me. And what about the woolworth's carbon foot print? They refrigerate the whole store instead of just the food...not very environmentally friendly...

Please stop all use of regular eggs in Woolworths products, and use only free-range eggs.

(Your organic range is another - your tendency to over-package is not) While I have sympathy for your stance that eggs as ingredients in foods are less visible and the customer might therefore not recognise, value and ultimately reward if they are also free-range, one might also look at your attitude as attempted "cheating". Battery egg farming is sheer abuse and abuse of any kind cannot be tolerated. The fact that there is an alternative - free range farming - makes battery egg farming even more inexcusable. The price of free-range will come down when demand goes up. But we have to create the demand - and that starts with our retailers choosing to stock and use only free-range eggs. I really want to believe that there are good people and good companies in this world - especially in South Africa because this is where I live and I love it. Good people and good companies are defined by their actions and the principles that they live and operate by. You need ask yourself only one question: Would I like to live like this? If your answer is NO, then as a company you have a moral obligation to do the right thing. And it's really not that difficult. Decide to stock and use only free-range eggs.

Provide more info on how your produce is produced. Imporantly consider water use and carbon

Woolworths cleaerly understands the issues associated with battery chickens or woud not use the advertising line about free range eggs that they do. There is therefore nto excuse for their use of battery eggs in theor products, nor for their sale of battery chickens.

I only support Woolworths when purchasing my foods, I always believed Woolies put the animals first and therefore I pay the extra for free range/organic products. I was shocked to discover Woolies has been using battery eggs in their food products. How can you advertise "free as a bird" on one end but do the exact opposite regarding the use of battery eggs. It makes me wonder about authenticity of the other free range/organic products you advertise, is it also a lie, the public doesn't know we put our trust in Woolworths, please don't let us down. I would MUCH prefer if you used free range eggs for ALL your products. It is surprising and dissapointing to know that you in fact support the battery hen trade.

Hi,I always buy my eggs at Woolworths as I commend Woolies for being pioneers in promotion free-range eggs only and buy their organic and free range produce for my baby and family. I did not think further about what goes into their products and would like to plea with Woolies to take their commitment one step further and commit to using free range eggs in all their products and the Cafe. This is not a nice-to-have! Woolworths attempts (very poorly indeed) to portray an identity of social responsibility and yet covers up its continued animal cruelty through marketing?? For our society to progress morally we need to take responsibility for our actions as humans and ensure that we do away with practices supporting such intense cruelty and disregard for life's value. Please rethink all use of battery eggs - this is so clearly morally reprehensible. We simply must try to move towards a more humane (if that is the right word) way of treating the animals that we feed on. It's bad enough being slaughtered. Let's try and make their time on earth a little better.

I would like to see more free range products on your shelves, and not only in your meats section but in your other products too. I only purchase products that are free range and as such am very limited in what I can purchase at your stores. Many people are catching onto the concept of ethical eating and I think Woolworths is in a good position to force suppliers to treat their live stock with humanity. Not only would this be a great step forward for relieving animal cruelty, it would also result in a great profit for Woolworths as there are very few stores that do have free-range products on their shelves and you would be ahead of the market.

The issue for Woolworths should not be about making more money by using free range items; the main objective of switching to free range products should be about making a difference and choosing to become a more compassionate store by opting for more humane methods of produce. Woolworths is a well established organisation and as such will not go bankrupt if it switches to free range products yet maintains the same prices as it did by serving/selling battery famed eggs. What Woolworth is insinuating by rejecting the choice of free range over battery farming is that this organisation is more interested in profit rather than doing the right thing. This is disappointing and I am quite frankly disgusted by Woolworths response. In the future I doubt I will offer support to this store by shopping in it. I would much rather spend my money at Pick & Pay because this store demonstrated integrity when it accommodated its customers by acknowledging its mistake to use battery farmed eggs and have instead opted to use free range eggs instead for its 'largest omlette' attempt. Here is a suggestion to Woolworths - take a page out of Pick & Pay's book and learn to accommodate ALL of your customers. Develop integrity and you will not lose loyal customers like myself who have always shopped at Woolworths regardless of this store being more pricey with its products. I would have thought that since Woolworths does not support vivisection and produces its own animal cruelty free cosmetic range, that this option to switch to free range would not be a problem. Apparently I was sadly mistaken. I always made sure to purchase my make up and cosmetics only from Woolworths but I will now stop purchasing from this store and instead switch to Bionike, Avon or the Mr Price make up products - all of which are cruelty free make up ranges.

Customers are being lied to about the quality of woolworths products. woolworths only cares for the bottom line, & not animals or consumers.i won't support them if their word is not honoured. I think it is a crying shame that Woolworths who profess to give consumers the best and healthiest of ingredients in their products, including organic where possible, cannot see their way to taking it a step further by showing compassion for hens. Consumers get accustomed to price increases quite quickly and if Woolworths creatd a demand for free range eggs the price of them would surely decrease.

I had no idea Woolworths still used products with battery produced eggs. I'm quite horrified as I thought Woolworths really cared about this issue. Please also stock organic milk, cream and butter in ALL your stores. Preferably in sufficient quantities, I often find these have run out in my local Woolworths, Waterstone Village.

It would be great to know that all products used are Free Range. I know organic is pushing it as I saw that a tray of eggs was R49 this morning which is out of my budget (I have four kids who live on a tray of eggs every few days) - but I ONLY buy my eggs, milk and meat at Woolworths because of the perception that it is more 'animal-friendly'. It would be good to push the perception to your other products.

Woolworths is taking the ethical high-ground in terms of their marketing strategy where they state: "We think our hens enjoy having space to behave like they should." I think Woolworths should start behaving like its "caring" campaign and sell only free-range eggs in all it's products.

Its about time that this issue is taken seriously by a retailer that makes many CLAIMS about being green and supporting these issues.

I shop at WW foodstore ALL the time but never thought about this and I only ever eat and buy free range eggs and chicken. Plse consider changing this in your ready made meals etc.

My neighbours farm battery eggs and those chickens live a horrid life. It is not an abstract concept to me, but real chickens I ride past every day.

Stand against the lies, get what you pay for and what is promised. When I go to Woolworths I expect to get what I go there for, especially at the ridiculous prices. Not only is there cruelty towards animals involved in all this but what else are companies hiding from the public?

We need to look at the fact that if they are these intelligent creatures and understand more than we think, then how can we close them up in tiny spaces. I for one am prepared to pay a little more for meals prepared with free range eggs...the extra cost should be minimal as free range eggs really do not cost much more than battery eggs, and they are normally only a very small part of a meal. Window dressing doesn't cut it neither does false advertising. We were are proud to be Woolworths customers when woolworths advertised that only free range eggs would be sold. We felt used and abused when the truth became know about the eggs used in the prepared meals. If Woolworths can not make the decision on ethical grounds do it on business grounds - loosing my business and thousands others like me.

I never buy battery eggs and have recently started asking more about ingredients and where they come from. I have two teenagers in the home and they refuse to eat battery chicken or non free range eggs. I am very proud of the awareness shown by my children and their friends.

I am a loyal Woolworths customer & the bad publicity surrounding the battery egg debate has reached me via the electronic airwaves. Woolworths is known to be socially responsible & it would really set a precedent if they agree to use free range eggs only in their ready-to-eat meals - I can't think of any other more progressive thinking retail chain that would take up this challenge. I have rehabilitated some battery hens and it really is a shame what we subject animals to in order to feed us(some of these hens couldn't even walk!). I have my own chickens and don't buy eggs from anyone if I have not proof that the chickens laying the eggs have a good life - one that all animals are entitled to. Human beings are far too concerned with themselves - what about animals that cannot speak for themselves?

Double standards if you advertise one thing and then on the other hand do the opposite. I really can't imagine not buying Woolies food but if it comes to that then I will make other plans!

Dear Woolworths My trust in your stores had been substantially eroded since I realised that much of what you say about ethical living and shopping is actually greenwash. Please make the switch to ethically sourced food in all its forms, and in particular, ban the use of battery eggs IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR PRODUCTS, so that people like me can feel that it is safe to shop in your stores once again.

Please do this for our earth, for our pathetic little creatures no matter how small and seemingly insignificant. They too have feelings. They too have their dignity, believe it or not.

I am a loyal shopper at Woolies and have spent thousands there just this year. If you think for one second your consumers are not conscious of the cruelty you perpetuate, you are gravely mistaken. I emailed Woolworths at the begining of the year to find out whether the eggs in convenience foods were free range, when i found out that they were battery eggs i was horrified. IT IS DISGUSTING!!!! I have lost serious faith in Woolworths, they claim to be a lot of things but at the end of the day it is just marketing hype. At least Pick n Pay doesn't lie to us. I have been boycotting all eggs products at Woolworths since the begining of the year, and as i am vegetarian this seriously impacts on the amount of food i buy from them. I try to go to deli's and support smaller stores now, Pick n Pay is making serious improvements and I am shopping there more and more. To Woolworths - don't think that you can lie to your customers and get away with it, it might take us a little while, but we will eventually get organised and take our business somewhere else. I am totally disgusted to think of the battery eggs in the woolworths food.

I am shocked by this as I thought Woolworths was trying to make a difference but behind closed doors you are cutting corners on costs and the lives of chicken to save a little bit of money. I agree with all the comments against battery chickens. I am a farmer and started growing chickens for meat and eggs on UK standards. I give every chicken at least 10m2 of roaming space outside! If you want to do something, please just do it right!!!

I feel hugely uncomfortable shopping at Woolworths knowing that you are supporting battery chicken farmers. Whenever I try to buy a free range grill chicken they are always out of stock but you always have plenty of battery chickens for sale. Also I do not buy your chicken pies for the same reason and buy only feta and cheese which is also only available in small amounts.

The ideal would be to remove animal products from your products all together - for environmental, health and ethical reasons. Explore the use of vegan baking techniques, for example, and use tofu instead of egg in salads etc. In the medium-term, the very least you can do is use free-range.

I regularly shop I regularly shop at WW food section, as I like to be a responsible consumer, preferring to by free range / organic produce. I was very shocked to hear that WW do not use the free range egg in any of their convenience foods, which I regularly bought, but will no longer do. Please WW ensure you practice what you advertise and please be a responsible consumer, so I may go back to my lazy lifestyle of convenience meals.

It's a bit hypocritical not selling battery eggs but using them in all other products. If you're going to make a difference, make a BIG difference.

Please keep up with the times and listen to the voice of your consumers. As much as I hate Pick n Pay I will take my monthly R6500 food shop to their stores. In currect trends humans seek freedom of choice and space to choose and select the things they find important. A happy worker is not a satisfied worker as we seek things far beyond what money can provide. Now we compare this to chickens: If a hen is healthy and happy, free and in the open are they not more inclined to produce twice the amount of eggs twice the size as they have the freedom and choice to be chickens. They may not be human but it requires us as higher intellectual beings to understand the need of those beings below us. Whether religious or not God made animals first and put man on earth to name them and to care for them!!! Please let us sensistize ourselves to the understanding of animals as they are at the mercy of us big bad nasty humans! It is our waste that destroys the land, seas and air. Woolworths should also change all their readymade meals to having vegetarian cheese (no animal rennet)as what is the point of selling all dairy this way, but still using animal rennet in things like vegetable ravioli etc which those of us who don't eat meat would like to purchase? If you could please realize that there is sufficient abuse accuring on battery egg farms. I would pay R2 more for a muffin at woolworths if I now the eggs used in it is free range and not grained fed. I am so totally shocked and dissapointed in Woolworths...I had, to date, been "bragging" to everyone I know that Woolworths have taken the lead in the fight against cruelty to animals. Especially as they stand at the fore front and so are really the public eye - informing us of their dedication to supporting only free range products and farming...I so hoped they would be the example to all other chain stores as to how to move forward regarding not supporting cruelty to animals....I am really saddened.....

I am very dissapointed with this state of affairs. Even though I am not well-off, I pay a bit more for my groceries by buying from Woolworths, because I always thought you were the only retailer respecting the rights of animals.

It is most disheartening that Woolworths have not gone the completely free range route with all their products containing eggs but led the public to believe they were buying completeley free range merchandise. "Free as a bird" my foot!

Woolies - a name synonymous with quality, value and (until now) ethics. Are you prepared to loose your reputation for a few cents more by using eggs from caged birds to remain 'cometitive'?

I've always considered Woolworths as a company superior to other food-suppliers in the sense of quality and ethical business. When I found out about the battery eggs in your products I was and still am very disappointed. Why make so much effort to support the idea of free range, but not wholly follow through? It feels as if Woolworths thought it could dupe the consumer into believing the 'ethical' branding which you have created for yourselves. Note 'ethical' in brackets, as I will now doubt every single thing that WW tells me. I also think it was easy to get away with battery eggs in mixed products such as cakes etc, beacause most consumers trust WW without question, and won't think further to ask if the eggs in the products are free range- as you have created a very strong image of ethical business, and it was assumed by me and many other consumers that WW would live up to it. It seems now that it is not so. After this, and the gelatine in the yoghurts I am losing more and more confidence in WW and will not shop with you as often as I have. There is no way for me to 'check up' on your ethicalness, and after being duped a few times, I think its time to move on to farmers markets where I can make a more informed decision about my food. As a committed Woolworths customer, I strongly urge you to end any use of products using battery produced eggs. I shall certainly not purchase any further products containing battery eggs. Further, I would request that you extend this philosophy to your chicken products, so that they only contain free range birds. I currently do not buy any chicken products at woolworths, other than the free range chicken pieces and would love to purchase more of your products. I commend the work that you have done so far, but it does not go far enough. We need to put an end to the inhumane treatment of animals as a matter of urgency. You may not get many direct requests from our relatively apathetic public, but there is huge public support for compassionate food products, and your clients will certainly support you if you support us in making this change.

I am a loyal customer thanks to your efforts to go above and beyond in offering quality foods to your customers. I do however warn you that this is the second bit of misleading advertising I have endured from you the first being your "Non Genetically Modified" campaign. This has compromised my trust in you and has done far more damage than good to our relationship. What else are you untruthful about? PnP does not treat me like an idiot and is also putting in big effort. Need I say more!

I have been trying to get photographs of WW free range farm from them for about 2 months. Have been made promises but nothing has materialised as yet. Sees to me that WW has a lot to hide!!!Havent been buying their chicken or eggs for last 2 months and neither has my friends.

The internet publicity surrounding Woolworths and battery eggs is not doing Woolworths' image as a responsible retailer any good. The power of the internet is immense. The more retailers stop supporting the battery hen farmers, the quicker they will go out of business. Is it really that difficult or costly to make this change & would others not follow if a big retail name like Woolworths do the ethical thing?

Battery eggs are an incredibly cruel product that require unspeakable suffering of birds for the sake of money. Help stop this barbaric "farming" practice.

As a self declared "green" food and merchandise retailer the environmentally concious consumer paying more at the Woolworths outlets is entrusting the company to uphold its environmentally friendly policies.

At the very least we would appreciate if you could label your produce with: free range eggs used, or so! So we can make an informed choice!

I will not be buying any cakes,pies,quiches etc until such time that I can be assured that only free range eggs from a reliable source are being used.

It is such a pity that greed drives the market place!!

I am a proud South African and it shames me when one of our biggest retailers are so ignorant and heartless.

The EU has committed to banning battery cages from 2012. Woolworths should commit itself to, as their advertising says, only to free range in all products.

I find it unacceptable that Woolworths misleads the public by creating the impression that they sell only free range eggs, when in fact, their prepared foods are made with eggs from battery chickens. In future, I will think twice before believing Woolworths guarantees of humanely produced foods!

I am extremely disappointed that WW do not use free range eggs in their dishes. What is the purpose then to sell free range eggs? I am not buying any prepared dishes until I am assured that free range eggs are also used in the WW dishes.

My family and I have been loyal WW customers for more than 43 years. We love the quality of WW but this is not acceptable, in fact it is very misleading

Woolworths has taken a leading step toward the goal of a cruelty free farming when committing to free range eggs. I urge woolworths to continue with vigour on its path toward being a store that only offers its clients products that are ethical in every way. Each step is an example to all other chain stores and the public of compassionate business practice.

I commit to absolutely not buying or consuming your battery farmed products till you make the ethical choice and change. Do the right thing! Now.

All eggs should be produced in an ethical, humane manner. Please do not support battery farming in any way!

Battery eggs are produced by hens who live in cramped, caged conditions with a space allowance each of 75% of an A4 sheet of paper. Their beaks are always seared off and they do not have access to sunlight or the ability to exercise any of their basic behavioural needs such as laying an egg in a nest, dust-bathing, sun-bathing, foraging and scratching for food. After a year, the rate at which they lay eggs drops from one egg every 25 hours to one every 34 hours. They are no longer considered “economically viable” and are sent to cull farms where hawkers buy them for slaughter in informal settlements. Please join me in this petition which aims at ending the cruel and unnecessary practice of battery farming in South Africa.
